School of the Air (SOTA), Broken Hill

TOSOTA joins together with SOTA and Hay SOTA at various times throughout the year so that students, supervisors and teachers can benefit from sharing ideas, resources, lessons and excursions.

Home Tutor’s Conference

SOTA runs a Home Tutors' Conference early in Term 1 each year. Supervisors old and new are encouraged to attend the Conference as they would benefit from the variety of informative sessions aimed specifically at distance education schooling. The Conference is also a fantastic opportunity for supervisors to network and share experiences.

Sports Day

TOSOTA students always look forward to participating in SOTA’s Sports Day, held in Term 3 each year.  It is a great opportunity for students to meet and compete with other students and to catch up with friends they might have met during excursions or previous sports days. 

Cross Campus Meetings

Teachers take advantage of the video conferencing technology to hold regular cross campus meetings.  As the satellite technology is new to all campuses, teachers are keen to share different and innovative ways to utilise the system during lessons.  This regular contact enables teachers to work together to provide the best opportunities for students.

Satellite Co-ordinator and Studio 2

The Satellite Co-ordinator is a teacher who manages Studio 2 at Broken Hill SOTA, from where Hay and Tibooburra lessons are hosted.  The Satellite Co-ordinator operates the computers and other equipment in Studio 2, to work with the teacher in TOSOTA’s studio to conduct satellite lessons.  Students greet and interact with the Satellite Co-ordinator, just as they do with their class teacher.

Relief Teachers

The satellite technology also makes it possible for the teacher in Studio 2 to conduct lessons, in the absence of the class teacher.  This has reduced lesson cancellations that would usually occur when class teachers are absent from school due to home visits, courses, meetings, illness etc.
